Public domainThe Flight of the Saxons & The Lost Ending
Embroidered Latin titulus: « ET FUGA VERTERUNT ANGLI »
The surviving final section of the millennium-old embroidery: Saxon fighters flee into the forests of the Weald. Severely weathered over centuries, showing faded pigments and 19th-century needle repairs, it stands as the final preserved fragment before the lost ending of the frieze.
This fragment belongs to a continuous narrative: the upper and lower registers extend the main story with a bestiary, decorative motifs and symbolic echoes.
