Plate 08 / 21
Original embroidery · Scene 08
Public domainDeath and Funeral of King Edward
Embroidered Latin titulus: « HIC PORTATUR CORPUS EADWARDI REGIS AD ECCLESIAM PETRI APOSTOLI / HIC EADWARDUS REX DEFUNCTUS EST »
A poignant inverted narrative: the body of King Edward is carried in solemn procession to newly consecrated Westminster Abbey, while above, the dying monarch addresses his faithful followers from his deathbed.
This fragment belongs to a continuous narrative: the upper and lower registers extend the main story with a bestiary, decorative motifs and symbolic echoes.
